50th Anniversary of the Declaration
of Martial Law
Proclamation No. 1081, which the late Ferdinand E. Marcos signed two days prior to his announcement on live television on September 23, 1972, signaled the start of a harsh decade of military rule.
Human rights were completely abused during this time, and freedom of speech was severely restricted. According to Amnesty International, between 1972 and 1981, around 70,000 people were jailed, 34,000 were tortured, and 3,240 were died. Desaparecidos, often known as political prisoners, have not been located to this day.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Martial law, the LRC features reference and story books about Martial law. Check them out!
Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 771 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today.
